Selection Process

The selection process for the posts in SPSR Nellore will be based on an Interview. Candidates will be shortlisted based on their application, experience, and performance in the personal interview conducted by DLSA Nellore.

District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) SPSR Nellore is the district-level body responsible for providing free legal aid and services to marginalised sections of society — including SC/ST communities, women, children, persons with disabilities, and those below the poverty line. DLSA Nellore functions under the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which operates under the aegis of the Supreme Court of India, making it a quasi-judicial constitutional authority.

Established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the DLSA network covers every district in India. The Nellore unit operates under the supervision of the District and Sessions Judge, SPSR Nellore, and coordinates with the State Legal Services Authority (SLSA) and NALSA for policy implementation, legal awareness camps, Lok Adalats, and mediation programmes.

Legal Aid Defence Counsel at DLSA play a critical and often overlooked role in the Indian justice system. They represent accused persons in criminal cases who cannot afford private legal representation — ensuring that the constitutional guarantee under Article 39A (equal justice and free legal aid) is actually delivered at the Sessions Court level. The posts being recruited — Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel and Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel — are stationed at Sessions Court, SPSR Nellore, handling daily criminal trial appearances on behalf of indigent accused.

For a practising criminal lawyer, a DLSA position offers institutional stability that private practice rarely provides, especially in the early years. The work is substantive — daily court appearances in real criminal trials — which builds courtroom experience faster than most private junior positions. The contract structure means the role is reviewed periodically, but NALSA-funded positions have generally seen continuity as the legal aid system has expanded nationally. DLSA positions are especially well-suited for advocates who are already enrolled with the Bar Council of Andhra Pradesh and have an established practice base in Nellore district courts.
